When they win, we’ll be: When more nursing home workers are united in SEIU Local 285, union members have more power to negotiate better pay and working conditions. Star of David nursing home workers united in Local 285 in 2001 and have been trying ever since to negotiate their first contract. Star of David is owned by the giant for-profit nursing home chain Kindred Healthcare. On February 6, Kindred unilaterally cut workers’ hours from 40 to 37.5 per week. The cut in hours reduces essential communication between staff on residents' needs and cuts workers pay. Management also wants to implement schedules requiring mandatory overtime while at the same time allowing it to send workers home without pay after reporting for their regularly scheduled shifts. Help Star of David workers win on the picket line!
